22 momme on the pillowcases
Grade 6A long fibre mulberry silk. 22 is the top of the sensible range for a pillowcase: lighter wears through, heavier stops draping.
Less friction, not a treatment
Silk lets hair and skin slide instead of gripping. That is a property of the weave, and it is as far as we will take the claim.
Satin is not second best
A polyester satin glides much the same way, machine washes, and costs about a third as much. We would rather sell you that honestly than sell you silk you did not need.
One pillow size, said plainly
Every pillowcase here is 51 cm by 76 cm, the standard Australian pillow. A king pillow will not fit, and that belongs on the product page rather than the returns page.

A single pillowcase
The most common first purchase, and the one where the difference is most noticeable. Your face and hair spend a third of the day on it, in one place.
A flat sheet
The next piece worth having in silk, because it touches the rest of you. Ours is one 19 momme flat sheet rather than a set, which the page says twice.
A whole bed in satin
The four or six piece microfibre set dresses everything for less than a single silk sheet costs. Different trade, honestly priced.
An eye mask or a bonnet
22 momme mulberry, the same silk as the pillowcases. The mask is cut to sit around the nose; the bonnet is cut with room for the hair you actually have.
Sleepwear

The things people ask before ordering
Is everything on this site actually silk?
No, and each page says which it is. The mulberry silk range is 100 per cent silk: the pillowcases at 22 momme, the flat sheet and the men's robe and boxers at 19, the women's pyjama set at 16. The satin range is a satin weave in polyester or viscose, which glides in much the same way and costs a fraction as much. Satin is a weave and silk is a fibre, so the word satin on its own tells you nothing about the material.
What does momme mean?
It is a weight. Silk thread is too fine for a useful thread count, so a standard piece is weighed instead and the weight in pounds is the momme. Higher means denser and longer wearing. Our pillowcases are 22 momme, which is the top of the sensible range for a pillowcase.
How much is delivery?
Free across Australia on orders of $90 or more. Below that the method offered is Express Delivery at $25, which is also available above the threshold as a paid upgrade. Allow 5 to 7 days after a 24 to 48 hour handling time.
Do the prices include GST?
Yes. Every price on this site includes GST, so the figure on the product page is the figure you pay.
Do you deliver outside Australia?
No. This store ships within Australia only. Flair Silk has stores in other countries and they are linked from the brand's own site if you need one.
Which pillow size do the pillowcases fit?
51 cm by 76 cm, the standard Australian pillow. A king pillow will not fit.
Can I return something if I change my mind?
Yes, within 15 days, unused and in its original packaging with proof of purchase. A change of mind return carries a $29 handling charge and you cover the return postage. That is our own policy rather than a legal right: Australian law gives no statutory cooling-off period for an online purchase.
What if something arrives faulty?
Then the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law apply and nothing in our returns policy limits them. Tell us straight away and we will sort out a repair, replacement or refund. For a major failure the choice is yours rather than ours.
How do I wash silk without ruining it?
Cold water at 30 degrees or below, hand wash or a gentle machine cycle in a mesh bag, a detergent with no enzymes and no bleach, air dried out of direct sun. No dryer. The satin range is far less fussy and goes in the machine on cold.

Can I have a pillowcase embroidered?
Yes. Add Custom Embroidered Silk Pillowcase to the order alongside the pillowcase and put the wording in the note field at checkout. It adds 2 to 3 days to the handling time and an embroidered case cannot be returned on a change of mind.

Silk or satin, and how to tell what you are buying
This is the short version of what we have learned selling both: what each is good at, where it is the wrong choice, and how to look after it so it is still worth having in a few years.
Satin is a weave. Silk is a fibre.
This is the single most useful thing to know in this category, and a lot of shops are comfortable leaving it unsaid. Satin describes how the threads are woven, not what they are made of, so a satin fabric may be silk, polyester, viscose or nylon. A product called a satin silk pillowcase can legitimately contain no silk at all. On this site the fabric is named in the first two lines of every product page and again in the specifications.
What momme measures
Momme is a weight, not a thread count. Silk thread is too fine to count usefully, so a standard piece is weighed and the weight in pounds is the momme. Higher means denser and longer wearing. Our pillowcases, eye mask, bonnet and baby mittens are 22 momme; the silk flat sheet, the men's robe and the men's boxers are 19; the women's silk pyjama set is 16. Bedding wants the higher number because it takes friction in one place every night. Garments want the lower one, so they hang and dry.
Grade 6A
Grade describes the raw fibre rather than the finish. 6A is the long fibre grade, and long fibres are what keep a surface even through years of washing. Short fibre silk works loose and roughens at the seam.
What silk actually does
Two things, both properties of the fibre. It reduces friction, so hair and skin slide across it instead of being gripped and tugged. And it moves moisture rather than holding it, which is why the same silk sheet suits a warm night and a cool one.
What it does not do is change how your skin ages or repair hair that is breaking for another reason. We do not publish effectiveness percentages and we do not claim a medical or dermatological outcome, because we cannot stand behind one.
When satin is the better buy
When it is going in the machine every week. Our satin range washes cold on a gentle cycle, resists stains and creases, and costs roughly a third of the silk equivalent. Silk wants cold water, an enzyme-free detergent, no bleach, no dryer and shade drying. A silk pillowcase washed badly lasts less time than a satin one washed properly, so be honest about which you will actually do.
Washing silk
Cold water at 30 degrees or below. Hand wash, or a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. A detergent with no enzymes and no bleach. Air dry out of direct sunlight and keep it away from the dryer, because heat is what ages silk. Iron on the lowest setting if you iron it at all.
Before you order, check the pillow
Every pillowcase on this site is 51 cm by 76 cm, which is the standard Australian pillow size and what almost every pillow sold here is. If yours is a king, or a contoured memory foam shape, measure it first. A case stretched over a pillow it was not cut for wears at the seam, and that is the one failure that is not the fabric's fault.
